As the weather warms up, many adventurous travelers are starting to make summer plans. If you're heading on a road trip across the country or to a neighboring state this summer, be sure to check out these essential road travel tips to avoid mishaps along the way.

Have Your Car Checked

Whether you're driving your own car, swapping driving shifts with a friend, or renting an RV, it's important to make sure your vehicle is in good condition before you leave home. No one wants to spend their vacation sitting in a broken-down car at the side of the road, so be sure to have your brakes, hoses, belts, and engine checked before your road trip.

Keep Your Phone Charged

Nothing takes the fun out of a road trip like realizing you have no idea where you are going. Paper maps have been almost entirely replaced by your cell phone's GPS, and being told exactly where to turn can make navigating in an unfamiliar city significantly easier. However, your phone's batteries have a habit of failing at the most inopportune times. Be sure to pack a spare charger and a power source, such as a portable power bank, and consider tossing a paper map in your car as a backup.

Don't Forget Your Spare Tire

Always bring at least one spare tire that is in good condition, and be sure that someone on the trip knows how to change it.

Schedule Driving Shifts

If you're traveling with friends this summer, make a plan for sharing driving responsibilities. Driving for too many consecutive hours can be unsafe, so make sure to pull over and get your rest if needed. Safety is always a number one priority.

Test Your Wipers and Headlights

Summer rain storms can come out of nowhere, and it's important for your car to be in proper condition to allow you to see and be seen through the elements. Be sure that your wipers and headlights are working correctly before you leave home.

A little bit of planning goes a long way toward having an unforgettable road trip. Take the time to make sure your vehicle is in the best possible condition in order to minimize the risk of experiencing car problems on your road trip this summer!
