The sun starting to shine
more, the birds are coming back and the blossoms on the trees are starting to
show! Spring is in the air. As we get ready to put the winter blues behind us
you may notice that your car is in need of some TLC.
Winter can do a number on
your car, especially the winter we had! This is a good time of year to
power wash the under-body of your
vehicle. The salt used to protect the roads during snow
storms, chemicals, insects, tar, soot, tree sap and bird droppings can all
affect your vehicles paint. They should be washed off using a light detergent
that is neutral. Do not use strong soap or chemical detergents. All cleaning
agents should be promptly flushed from the surface and not allowed to dry
there. Rinse the vehicle thoroughly with plenty of lukewarm water. Wipe the
remaining water off with a chamois or soft cloth.
How often should a
vehicle be waxed? Wax protects a vehicle's paint. It typically melts when it
gets hot, so the warm months are when the wax protecting your vehicle's paint
will rub off the quickest. It is recommended that a coat of wax be applied at
least three times a year, or whenever the surface no longer repels water.
Always wash and dry the vehicle before waxing and polishing. Use a good quality
polish and wax and apply them according to the manufacturer's instructions. Wax
or polish when the painted surface is cool. Be sure to polish and wax the
chrome trim, as well as the painted surfaces. Loss of wax on a painted surface
leads to loss of the original luster and also quickens the deterioration of the
surface.
Of course, the
interior of your car requires attention, as well. Make sure that your vehicle's
interior gets a thorough vacuuming and wipe down before the winter salt
roads become the summer sand castle tracks.
