Now that the weather is warming up, it’s time to start thinking about how you plan on spending your summer. If you love going on adventures, your summer plans may include a road trip. These trips can be everything from “pick a direction and go” to a carefully planned out event. No matter what type of road trip you’re planning, though, you do need to make certain your car is ready for the adventure. Nothing ruins a trip faster than breaking down on the side of the road. Here are a few tips for taking care of your car before your summer road trip.

Check Your Tires, Including the Space

How is the tread on your tires? If you notice any signs of damage, you may need to have your tires replaced before you leave. Also check for signs of wear and tear. Make sure they’re correctly inflated, and have them rotated if you haven’t done so recently.

If you have a spare tire, make sure it’s in good condition before you leave. Check the tread and make sure that it’s properly inflated. If you don’t have a spare or run-flat tires, you should look into purchasing one before your next road trip.

Change the Oil and Various Filters

If you haven’t had an oil change recently, you may want to get one done before you take a trip. Also change the oil filter, air filter, and any other items if they need it. If it has been several months or more since you’ve changed filters, you may want to put in clean ones. Also top off your windshield wiper fluid, power steering fluid, and any other fluids that need it.

Review Your Emergency Kit

What do you have in your emergency car kit? You should have jumper cables, a flashlight with good batteries in it, a wrench set, a Philips and flathead screwdriver, a hammer, a pair of pliers, and a car charging cable for your phone. Also include a blanket, a first aid kit, and a bottle of water. While this may seem like a lot, many car kits include all of these items. They are designed to take up very little space, too.

Clean and Organize Your Car

You’re about to add a good amount of luggage to your car, especially if you have several children or are road tripping with friends. You’re also going to be spending a lot of time in the car, so you don’t want there to be any odd smells or gross trash. Clean the car from top to bottom, front to back. That includes the truck, the glove compartment, and any other storage space.
